<image:caption>“Insulation is not just about hitting a U-value. It is about compatibility, durability and what the building is actually made from.” (This image shows cork insulation offcuts collected from site and stored for reuse. Rather than going to waste, these pieces can be repurposed in a number of practical ways - from packing out insulation gaps, to being granulated for use as a lightweight insulating aggregate within lime plasters, or even incorporated into plant pots to improve drainage, moisture management and soil aeration. Cork is a remarkably versatile material, and with a bit of thought, very little needs to be thrown away)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Figure X - Window lintel junction showing structural load path and thermal-bridge intensity In timber I-beam construction, primary structural loads are deliberately aligned to the internal face of the wall. This reduces the number and extent of solid timber elements penetrating the insulation zone, lowering thermal-bridge intensity at critical junctions such as lintels and load-bearing zones. In conventional stick-frame construction, loads are typically distributed across the full wall thickness. This increases the amount of solid timber crossing the insulation zone and makes thermal performance at junctions more sensitive to assumptions unless explicitly modelled and mitigated.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There’s a bit of a misconception around windows and Passivhaus buildings, that’s for sure. Some folks will tell you that you can’t open them at all! However you’ll be glad to know that this couldn’t be further from the truth! Just like all building’s, a dose of fresh air is thoroughly recommended! It’s just that Passivhaus goes multiple steps further than conventional modern buildings in helping to regulate and monitor the internal environment with a view to optimising health and energy consumption.</image:caption>

<image:title>Further Thoughts - Timber Frame Designer Aboyne Aberdeenshire | Locally Sourced Timber Frame Design Scotland - We're particularly excited about our recent collaborations with Highland Heritage Woodworks. We've been working on a stunning cabin project in Royal Deeside that promises a high-impact guest experience with a minimal environmental footprint. This project will be another showcase of the beauty and benefits of utilising timber from local woodlands, ensuring each element of the exposed post and beam frame, alongside the enclosed douglas fir framing, contributes to a deep sense of place and connection to the land. This project is just a glimpse of what's to come. We're eager to share more of our upcoming projects, from cosy timber cabins to bespoke self-build homes, as we continue to explore the endless possibilities of timber frame construction here in Scotland and beyond.</image:title>

<image:title>Further Thoughts - A trainee timber designer’s first solo project. - The final items on the to-do list were the rendering and technical drawings using both SketchUp and Dietrich’s. Sketchup is perfect for adding rendered layers to the image, fleshing out the design, and giving it a more realistic aura, extremely helpful when showing an eager client how their desired structure is going to look. It was great fun tailoring the details for the garden room and bringing it to life with objects from a wealth of options from the SketchUp library database. I could have spent days delving into the myriad of possibilities, but with time constraints ever looming, settled on the design you can see in the above images. To round it all off, the technical drawings were drafted up, depicting the key measurements of the space, ensuring that the structure conforms to all of the necessary specifications, extremely important when running the clients and engineers through the details. With the drawings completed and sent off to the client, hopefully for the thumbs up (in this instance, all theoretical of course!), we move onto the next job; liaising with clients, pouring over plans, framing designs in the software, all whilst plotting the next steps in my training. The journey continues…</image:title>

<image:caption>Many recent and exciting changes have taken place at OSO Timber since the new year. We moved into a new office location in Canterbury where we are actively looking to work in partnership with local businesses and collaborators, and new clients are also sending us inspiring project ideas. But for the last month, we have also had the pleasure of introducing our newest team member, Tom Gibbs. Tom is our trainee designer, and he has been diving straight into learning all the tricks of the trade, all our software and processes, and he is already leaving his mark with his own creations. We have asked Tom a few questions about himself and his beginnings at OSO:</image:caption>

<image:title>Further Thoughts - Chasing a paradise of wood and getting inspired by nature - Autumn is the time for preparation, learning, doing some self-examination, and identifying areas for growth. It is important for us to work with the seasons and make nature a part of our every day in this way. This is why we are thrilled to have now embarked on Natwest’s Entrepreneur Accelerator Programme, as we want to implement state-of-the-art strategies, learn from other local businesses, and help inspire like-minded start-ups.</image:title>

<image:title>Oak Porch - Front porch designs for houses in the UK range from enclosed box spaces, to open door canopies, sweeping verandas to simple overhangs. Porches can add depth to a plain façade, provide a gracious reception space and act as a bridge linking the house and garden areas.</image:title>
<image:caption>OSOTIMBER can help with your front porch ideas, however simple or wacky they may be! From fine tuning your minimalist design principles, to coming up with something truly unique. This is an opportunity for a homeowner to clearly stamp their own personality onto the front of their home, with varying degrees of detailing and levels of complexity possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Oak Porch - Whilst the aesthetics of a wooden porch speak for themselves, the homeowner can also profit from the additional space that they provide. By acting as a conduit between the outside elements and indoors, porches can be used as a practical space with storage potential, somewhere to stow away muddy boots or wet jackets and create shelter from ever-changing weather with an enclosed (glazed) design, all whilst providing a welcoming focal point to your home.</image:title>
<image:caption>A porch may be the last thing you contemplate when considering a timber structure for your home, but will forever leave you with that indelible first impression, each time you step through the front door.</image:caption>

Until the seventeenth century, the right to keep doves was a privilege enjoyed exclusively by the aristocratic elite. For this reason, dovecotes created before this period are almost always found within or close to castles and great houses. <image:title>Oak Framed Garage - An oak frame garage dovetails beautifully with historical and contemporary buildings – it’s by no means imperative that in order to “blend in” with existing structures, you need to compromise on the quality and durability that working with green oak offers and go with “modern” building material alternatives. Timber frames are here to stay and work effortlessly when tying in with pre-existing timber framed structures, or blending in with concurrent builds and trends, your uniquely tailored garage will be the envy of neighbours for miles around.</image:title>

<image:title>Room Above Garage - Popular versions in the UK include the traditional open battened ‘roof’, wooden pergolas with roofs, corner pergolas – in theory, pergolas can be shaped and fashioned by any area; patios, walkways, garden doors, a versatile structure with multifaceted benefits. These structures are a great tool when looking to create a ‘centre of attention’ piece which can also provide privacy as a garden screening idea, grant shade to a seating/socialising area prolonging its usage throughout the year but also when in-situ with glazed windows and doorways, creating a cooling effect in potential hot spots and for the more green fingered clients, a climbing nursery for wisterias, sweet peas and flowering clematis’. The pergola may be humble in origin but where it really stands out from the crowd is its versatility to fill any size and space, with the chance to extend a living space outside all the while lending itself to detailed customisation and the chance to create a truly unique design. .</image:title>

<image:title>Room Above Garage - Whether you are looking for a timber frame garage that blends in seamlessly in-situ with existing buildings, or a standalone centre piece, there are varying levels of complexity that can be achieved when tailoring a room above garage to your needs. This includes options for more or less exposed oak elements depending on the style of oak garage you choose and the context of other buildings and landscaping in which the outbuilding will inhabit.</image:title>
